How Optic protected famed Playboy Photographer Stephen Wayda's NFT Drop from copymints

Taking down 4 fake collections within 24 hours.
This past fall, internationally famed Playboy photographer Stephen Wayda announced the launch of the “When Pam Met Tommy” collection on the MakersPlace NFT marketplace. To protect his IP and track copymints in real time, the photographer leveraged Optic for Creators.
The Problem
The rapid growth of the NFT market over the last couple years led to a rise in NFT counterfeits (copymints). The risk of IP theft became a serious concern for creators and marketplaces—MakersPlace and Wayda included.
Even before Wayda’s NFT collection dropped, his photographs from the Pam & Tommy collection received a lot of attention. Then the mainstream success of the 2022 Pam & Tommy Hulu Series made the collection launch particularly susceptible to intellectual property theft even before the collection dropped. Soon copymints started to show up, and MakersPlace turned to Optic for help.
“As a marketplace for unique and one-of-a-kind art, MakersPlace is always looking for ways to protect our artists and their creations. That’s why we are excited to utilize Optic’s AI-powered detection tool to protect creator IP. With Optic, we were able to quickly and easily identify fake NFTs for Stephen Wayda’s NFT drop in real-time and protect our community from scams.“

The Solution
Within a week, Optic set up dedicated infrastructure and resources to create an industry-leading copymint detection solution for Wayda.
Optic leveraged its best-in-class AI-powered content recognition engine, and its industry leading authentic NFT database (with almost 40M NFTs) to monitor and find counterfeits across marketplaces & blockchains in seconds.
Wayda thus got access to the same powerful Optic tech that OpenSea uses to identify and takedown copymints on its platform. Optic’s tool for creators goes a step further by surfacing these copymints & derivatives in a customized dashboard for creators & helping them take down copymints via 1-click. In future, creators will also get email alerts every time copymints of their art is detected by Optic.
The Results
Four fake collections of Wayda’s original collection were detected and taken down by Optic in collaboration with OpenSea within 24 hours within the first week.
